According to circulating reports and eyewitness accounts, these young victims, many from Christian communities, are trafficked by Islamist militias and smuggling networks. They face horrific fates: forced into sexual slavery or sent to work in dangerous artisanal cobalt mines, where they endure backbreaking labor under life-threatening conditions for pennies a day.
Cobalt from these mines powers much of the world's smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicle batteries — making this not just a local crisis, but one tied to global supply chains.
Where is the international outcry?
Where is the United Nations?
Where is the consistent advocacy from human rights groups, celebrities, and political voices who champion social justice?
"Black Lives Matter," many declare loudly.
Yet the silence is deafening when the victims are Black Christian children in Africa.
This exploitation is an abomination — not only a violation of universal human rights, but a profound betrayal of African values, traditions, and the dignity of its people. No child should ever be treated as a commodity.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has long struggled with armed groups, including the ISIS-affiliated Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which have a documented history of kidnapping children for use as soldiers, laborers, and sex slaves, often forcing conversions. Broader child labor in cobalt mining affects tens of thousands, with estimates from organizations like UNICEF and human rights groups placing the number around 40,000 children in artisanal mines alone. Conditions include exposure to toxic dust, tunnel collapses, and extreme exploitation.
We cannot look away.
