The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has escalated its confrontation with Nigeria’s electoral umpire, formally submitting a strongly worded letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) demanding the immediate resignation or removal of its Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan.
In the letter dated **April 8, 2026**, and duly stamped “RECEIVED” by INEC, the party accused the commission’s leadership of **partisan conduct**, **gross misconduct**, **constitutional breach**, and undermining Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
The ADC alleged that recent public statements and actions by Prof. Amupitan have compromised INEC’s cherished neutrality. The party specifically accused the INEC Chairman of overstepping his constitutional bounds by interpreting court judgments — a responsibility the ADC insists belongs exclusively to the judiciary.
This latest move comes amid a heated leadership crisis within the ADC. INEC recently delisted the faction led by former Senate President Senator David Mark from its official portal, citing compliance with a Court of Appeal order to maintain the status quo. The ADC has rejected this action, describing it as biased and in contempt of court, while vowing to proceed with its planned congresses and national convention from April 7 to 14, 2026.
The party further claimed that INEC’s decisions appear to favour certain factional interests, warning that such perceived alignment is rapidly eroding public trust in the country’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“INEC is not a court of law,” the ADC emphasised. “It must operate strictly within the limits of the Constitution, upholding neutrality and professionalism at all times.”
The development has sparked wider reactions, with some political observers and groups also calling for Prof. Amupitan’s resignation just months after his appointment as INEC Chairman.
