A 32-year-old Nigerian man, **Christian Eze Promise**, has died after being taken into Delhi Police custody in West Delhi’s Rajouri Garden area.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening during “**Operation Kavach**,” an intensified anti-drug and suspicious activity patrol. According to police, Promise, who was in India on a student visa, was riding a scooter on the wrong side of the road near Rajouri Garden Metro Station. When a team of officers signaled him to stop, he allegedly accelerated, rammed his scooter into a police motorcycle, fell to the ground, and then attempted to flee on foot.
Officers chased and apprehended him. He was taken to the Special Staff office in Tagore Garden for questioning. Shortly afterward, he complained of feeling uneasy and unwell. Police immediately rushed him to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital in Khyala, where doctors declared him “brought dead” on arrival.
His body has been preserved at the AIIMS mortuary in New Delhi pending postmortem and other legal formalities.
In line with standard protocol for cases involving foreign nationals, Delhi Police have formally informed the **National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)**, the **Ministry of External Affairs**, and the **Nigerian High Commission**. A magisterial inquiry has already been initiated to determine the exact circumstances of his death, including whether it qualifies as a custodial death.
This tragic incident has once again spotlighted concerns over police procedures, the treatment of foreign nationals, and the handling of such cases in Delhi. While the full investigation is ongoing, many are calling for transparency and a thorough probe to establish the facts.
